Renewal is always possible, in life or at work

A Christian Science perspective.

By Sue Brightman / February 4, 2013

Years ago when a naturalist and I stood on the banks of Lake Michigan, a look of intrigue crossed her face. She bent down, put her hand in the water, and said, ?What do you know. The lake has turned over.? Knowing this had happened by feeling the temperature of the water, she explained that a natural seasonal phenomenon occurs in the Great Lakes when the intersection of specific properties ? surface temperature, water density, stratification, and displacement ? reaches a ?tipping point.? This results in a complete overturning of the lake from border to border, bank to bank.

The significance of this process is illumined for me by this statement by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science: ?Nature voices natural, spiritual law and divine Love, but human belief misinterprets nature. Arctic regions, sunny tropics, giant hills, winged winds, mighty billows, verdant vales, festive
flowers, and glorious heavens, ? all point to Mind, the spiritual intelligence they reflect? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 240).

What practical message might be available to us through this natural, spiritual law ? especially at times of uncertainty or fear?

At times we may be inclined to assume for ourselves what might be assumed about the lake ? that a total overturning is impossible. We may think that our time frame to contribute has expired. Or, we may be so familiar with our perceived limits that we cannot imagine things rearranged or expanded. But these beliefs are not true when we look through the lens of spiritual law.

Christ Jesus never accepted, or operated within, limits. Every difficulty he encountered, he sought to ?turn over.? He instantaneously healed birth defects, reversed death, forgave sins that would have had a woman stoned to death, and transformed character traits. Old paradigms of thought were eradicated, and fresh hopes were born.

Sometimes the turning over of life circumstances may be a step-by-step process. But just as the surface of Lake Michigan gradually heats up and a thermocline develops deep beneath the surface, so can the properties of our lives move toward a tipping point yet unseen ? a healing breakthrough that addresses whatever our current challenge may be.

Years ago I experienced this. In a job that was no longer a good fit, I was completely unclear about my next step, especially in a shifting marketplace. I prayed diligently. I knew that God?s law of good offers security and progress. As a student of Christian Science, I have also learned not to act precipitously.

Then unexpectedly, a place became available for me to rent during my vacation time. While there, a new work opportunity for me emerged. More quickly than I could have imagined, I moved house and started a new project that lasted many abundant years.

At times of uncertainty, we can affirm God?s omnipotence. Appealing to God?s natural laws of good, we can trust progress to occur in its own way and time, bringing satisfaction and renewal. The lake of our lives can indeed turn over.

Tales from Elsewhere

I'm currently looking for another two people to fill in spots for my roleplay: Tales from Elsewhere. The roleplay follows the story of three teenagers who are whisked away into another world. They set off in search of a way home with a group that also consists of a squire who abandoned his training, a foreign princess, her bodyguard, a witch who was chased from her homeland and a cutpurse who lived on the streets. They travel across the continent of Taakeira which is filled with many varying cultures, landscapes and people. Interested? Keep reading, then.

Introduction

It's not uncommon to have your grandparents leave you peculiar objects in their will, but never has anyone received such a life changing as the story of the young man we are about to follow. After his grandfather passed away he was left a diary detailing a search for an ancient treasure hidden somewhere within North America. However, many parts of the diary were encoded into riddles and seemingly meaningless drawings. Unable to solve much of it himself, he enlisted the help of two of his close friends. The three came to the conclusion that the treasure they were looking for was a priceless gemstone hidden within a tomb in the Rocky Mountains.

The trio found the tomb after following all the cryptic instructions provided by the diary and managed to get inside. It wasn't much of a tomb; more of a stylized cave. In the centre stood a pedestal, and atop that pedestal lay a beautiful, gleaming, ebony gemstone. The boy leading the expedition was drawn towards it like a moth towards a flame and pressed his hand to it as soon as he was close enough. He knew nothing of what he was doing until it was too late, a wave of purple light enveloped the tomb, transporting everyone inside to another world; a world known as Taakeira.

Upon arriving in Taakeira, the trio soon heard of an old legend regarding an archipelago far away from Taakeira known as the "Holy Islands". The Holy Islands were supposedly hidden from mortals by the gods, so only the worthy could find them. The Holy Islands house vast wealth, and anyone who can find them will be granted an audience with the gods. The Trio became certain that this was their way home, and so set off in search of them.

The World of Taakeira

Strictly speaking, Taakeira is just the continent of the world it's on, but it's the only continent, and so the whole world is often referred to as Taakeira. Taakeira is almost like Pangaea, but its shape is far different and it has various little islands dotted around the mainland. The mainland consists of five large, almost circular masses (known fittingly as circles) that would be separate islands were it not for the thin land bridges that all connect the centre of Taakeira on a peninsula known as the "Dragon's Pass". It is so named because it is home to the great dragon Klatzo, a sentinel of the gods who exists to prevent war amongst the different circles. His five children (Degetbura, Kaatanmura, Thorak, Alsar and Hclia) each guard one of the land bridges. His mate, Niria, guards the seas. The dragons are fairly lenient, and let most ordinary travellers through without any trouble. Each land bridge is named after it's respective dragon.

The first circle lies in the northwest and houses the countries Akhar and Bhaeldron. The second circle lies in the north and houses Ik'Ra. The third circle lies in northeast and houses Gar and Yesterhold. The fourth circle lies in the southeast and houses Dhara. The fifth circle lies in the southwest and houses Ghaliar and Irvar. The island country of Thania is situated west of the Dragon's Pass.

Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur: Kawasaki's 3 Steps to Success ...

I just interviewed Guy Kawasaki, the former Apple evangelist, social media master, and author of 12 books.?We met up at the New Media Expo in Las Vegas and talked about how to grow your following and self promote without being icky. He, in particular, was very keen to talk about self-publishing?understandably because his second self-published book, APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur ? How to Publish a Book is out now. So he is on the speaking circuit and busy self-promoting.

Luckily, Guy is charming and has some unusual ideas, once you get past the basics. He cautions authors that writing won?t make you rich:

?The best 2 motivations for writing a book are because you have something to say that is of value?what a concept! The second is because it?s on your bucket list; it?s an intellectual challenge.?

I certainly learned this lesson myself. Read about what happened to me in the 6 months after self-publishing Camera Ready: How to Present Yourself and Ideas On Air or Online.

But Guy has 3 publishing plans for authors?and number 3 hadn?t occurred to me:

Plan A) Traditional

Find an agent, find an editor, cut a deal. ?They give you an advance, they publish you, the publicist gets you on all the shows, life is good. That?s plan A. Never happens. Even if you get acquired then you get the attention of your publicist for 4 weeks. Sink or swim,? says Kawasaki.

Plan B) Self-publishing

You write it, you publish it, you market it all yourself.

Plan C) B + A

Kawasaki explains, ?You self-publish it, you market it , you do the best you can. God help you it takes off. Then a traditional publisher, who is with it, says, ?Ah, this self-published book is doing well! I should acquire this book and the rights to the next 2 books!??

I didn?t think about going backwards, i.e. publishing and THEN getting a publisher, but I guess that?s what EL James did with 50 Shades of Grey.

So, other than God helping you, how to market yourself?

Kawasaki says to position yourself as an expert to a small segment of followers in a niche, genre, or sector. Let?s say you are writing a Southern cookbook and plan to put it out in 9 months?

Step 1: Link to and write about other content.

For example, tweet an NPR profile of Julia Child, Facebook a special YouTube of Bobby Flay, blog about a Wired article on the science of cooking, and Pinterest great recipes you?ve found and tested.

Step 2: Be consistent

?When you are known as an expert in food you get retweeted, you get shared, you get followed so it becomes an upward spiral,? says Kawasaki.

Step 3: Deliver your product

Tell your followers, ?Guess what! Now I have a book and for 9 months you?ve been grooving on my curation so you know I know what I?m talking about,? he says.

So where are YOU in this 3-Step process?

I found it very ironic that Guy told me he?d go back to a real publisher in a heartbeat because self-publishing is such a hassle. He also was very honest about his use of social media:

?For me, social media is a means to an end and that end is at times promotion of products.?

With 4 million followers, he?s done quite a job at it.? Meanwhile, I?m going to pitch my already self-published book to a couple of niche publishing houses. I?ll let you know what happens.

Few may pay for skipping health insurance, new regs show - Vitals

By Maggie Fox, Senior Writer, NBC News

People worried about having to pay a fine for not carrying health insurance coverage got a little more guidance this week with some new federal regulations. The bottom line: Hardly anyone will end up paying the tax when the health reform law takes full effect in 2014.

The Urban Institute has projected that only about 2 percent of Americans?would likely have to pay what the government calls the ?shared responsibility payment.? The new regulations from the Internal Revenue Service and the Health and Human Services Department explain all the ways people can get out of paying it.

?What we are talking about is a relatively small slice of the population,? says Linda Blumberg, senior fellow at the Urban Institute?s health policy center.

The Congressional Budget Office has said that 80 percent of the non-elderly population would have some sort of health insurance even without the health reform law.

The so-called individual mandate, one of the least popular provisions of the 2010 health reform law,?is meant to make sure that people don?t wait until they are sick to buy health insurance?especially as the law makes health insurance available more easily to more people, including those who are already sick.

The idea is that people will have many more chances to get health insurance because of the exchanges, the marketplaces where private insurance plans will offer policies for people to buy if they are not covered by an employer or by government-sponsored insurance such as Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare.

And the federal government is subsidizing all but the wealthiest buyers. The Supreme Court ruled it constitutional and says the payment is actually a tax.

It?s a nominal tax at first -- $95 in 2014, $325 in 2015 and $695 or 2.5 percent of household income in 2016. The IRS will make sure people pay it. Starting next year, you?ll have to declare where you get your health insurance on your income tax form.

?If you don?t pay on your tax returns if you own an assessment, what they are going to do is take it out of possible future tax refunds,? Blumberg said in a telephone interview.

One way the law aimed to get more people covered by health insurance was by making Medicaid more widely available. But the Supreme Court ruled last summer that states, which administer Medicaid and pay for part of it, could opt out.

The regulations make it clear there are plenty of exemptions. For instance, people who live in a state that has decided against expanding Medicaid won?t have to pay the tax if they would have been eligible for Medicaid.

So, if people live in a state that isn?t expanding Medicaid, they might not be on the hook to buy health insurance for themselves, although the government recommends they do.

?That?s an important clarification,? Blumberg says.

Also, people get one three-month slide. You can go for as long as three months, one time, without health insurance before the payment kicks in. After that, the IRS rules say people will be assessed 1/12th of the annual payment for each month they or their legal dependents lack coverage.

?For each month during the taxable year, a nonexempt individual must have minimum essential coverage or pay the shared responsibility payment,? the regulation reads.

People are exempt if they are in jail or prison, if they make too little money to file an income tax return ($9,500 a year for an individual), if their health insurance premium would cost them more than 8 percent of annual income, members of Indian tribes, those whose religion forbids buying health insurance, illegal immigrants, Americans living abroad, and members of a health care sharing ministry.

The IRS has a public hearing scheduled for May 29 on the new regulations.

Councils investigating pet ownership strategies with humane society ...

WATERLOO REGION ? Local officials want to see the community take better care of their furry friends.

The cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, along with the Kitchener-Waterloo and North Waterloo Humane Society, may implement new rules that would impact almost anyone involved with pets.

It could mean everything from cat licensing to permitting only shelter/rescued animals to be sold in pet stores.

?These are all highly political, highly emotionally charged issues potentially,? Waterloo Coun. Karen Scian said.

Monday, the two councils voted at separate meetings to collaborate with the humane society to deal, in particular, with a disastrous cat overpopulation problem.

They?re calling it a responsible pet ownership strategy. No decisions have been made.

?Across Canada about 40 per cent of cats that enter shelters are euthanized,? said Jack Kinch, executive director of the humane society. ?We can?t point a finger at anybody.

?It is a community problem and it needs to be addressed in a collaborative manner.?

Locally, more than 4,000 cats were taken to the humane society last year. That?s two-thirds of all animals that ended up at the shelter. About 1,600 would have been euthanized, based on Kinch?s statistic.

Sixty-three per cent of cats don?t have a microchip or other identification and less than one per cent go home. That compares to up to 40 per cent of dogs who are reunited with owners.

Not all of the proposals for the pet strategy will be popular.

?Cat licensing will be something that you as councillors will get pushback on from the community,? Kinch said.

Kinch said the idea has historically been controversial. Many owners argue their indoor cats don?t need identification, he said.

?We have a number of individuals that say the cat never gets out that we return (a cat to) three or four times a year,? Kinch said.

The strategies are expected to be a combination of bylaw and enforcement initiatives, licensing and education.

This could include:

?? cat licensing

?? banning the sale of pets that aren?t spayed or neutered

?? permitting only shelter/rescued animals to be sold in pet stores

?? licensing breeders

?? making spay/neuter services more accessible and affordable

?? managing feral/stray cat populations with trap/spay/neuter/release programs

?? enforcement of bylaws including fines

?Responsible pet ownership is about placing the emphasis of responsibility on pet owners and educating them about the health and safety of their pets, with significant benefit for the community at large,? said Shayne Turner, Kitchener?s director of enforcement.

Kitchener and Waterloo contract the humane society to provide animal control. In 2013, Waterloo will spend about $288,296 on animal control. Kitchener will spend about $328,000 for the humane society?s services including animal control and a spay/neuter program.

In 2012, the humane society had operating revenue of $1.5 million. Forty per cent came from program and adoption revenues and 61 per cent from community support.

It?s expected any changes would involve input from the public and stakeholders. No time frames have been determined.

In Cambridge, animal control is dealt with by the Cambridge Humane Society. The city does not license cats.

Shooter at Atlanta school was fellow student

ATLANTA (AP) ? A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said.

Multiple shots were fired in the courtyard of Price Middle School just south of downtown about 1:50 p.m. and the one boy was hit, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. In the aftermath, a teacher received minor cuts, he said.

The wounded boy was taken "alert, conscious and breathing" to Grady Memorial Hospital, said police spokesman Carlos Campos. Grady Heath System Spokeswoman Denise Simpson said the teen had been discharged from the hospital Thursday night. Campos said charges against the shooter were pending.

Police swarmed the school of about 400 students after reports of the shooting while a crowd of anxious parents gathered in the streets, awaiting word on their children. Students were kept at the locked-down school for more than two hours before being dismissed.

Investigators believe the shooting was not random and that something occurred between the two students that may have led to it.

Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis said the school does have metal detectors.

"The obvious question is how did this get past a metal detector?" Davis asked about the gun. "That's something we do not know yet."

The armed resource officer who took the gun away was off-duty and at the school, but police didn't release details on him or whether he is regularly at Price. Since 20 children and six adults were shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December, calls for armed officers in every school have resonated across the country.

Hours after the Atlanta shooting, several school buses loaded with children pulled away from the school and stopped in front of a church about a half-block away. Parents tried boarding the buses. Police who initially tried to stop the parents, relented and screamed, "Let them off!" about the students.

James Bolton was at work when his sister called saying a teen had been shot at his son's school and was in the crowd as parents began swarming the fleet of buses.

"Move, I see my son, I see mine!" he said, running up to embrace James Bolton Jr. "As long as I got this one back I'm OK," he said, holding his son's head against his chest as parents nearby frantically searched for their children.

Bolton Jr. said he was in class when the intercom sounded and a school official announced the building was under immediate lockdown.

"They told us we had to be quiet," Bolton told The Associated Press. "They said something went on in the courtyard." Bolton said he was unaware that anyone had been shot until a reporter asked him about it.

Shakita Walker, whose daughter is an eighth-grader at the school, said she received a text from her that said, "Ma somebody's shooting and somebody got shot." Walker, who works at another school, said she jumped in her car and was thinking "just hurry up and get there."

Walker said her daughter called to tell her that they were being kept in the gymnasium, but she said she was anxious to see her to make sure she was OK.

The fear and anxiety was palpable in the crowd, as one person yelled, "Does anyone know what happened?"

Superintendent Davis sympathized with concerned parents who complained that it took too long for students to be released from the building. He said emergency procedures were followed according to protocol and school district officials would meet Friday to review their response. Calls to the school district were not immediately returned.

Mayor Kasim Reed condemned gun violence in a statement shortly after the shooting and said counselors were at the school to meet with students, faculty and family members.

"Gun violence in and around our schools is simply unconscionable and must end," Reed said. "Too many young people are being harmed, and too many families are suffering from unimaginable and unnecessary grief."

Outside the school, Laquanda Pittman said she still hasn't heard from her sixth-grade son. She said she heard the news of the shooting on TV and immediately came to the school.

"All types of stuff went through my head. I'm wondering whether it was my child who got shot, is my child OK, did he see what happened?" Pittman said.

She said she just wants to see her son.

"As a parent, you just think you can send your child to school and you hope they come home OK," she said.
