Supplier of innovative small and medium-sized satellite systems SunSpace says its Sumbandila satellite has paved the way for further research and development into the requirements of a future, locally built, communications satellite over which the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) could have total control.
SunSpace executive director Ron Olivier says the Sumbandila satellite proves that a locally designed and built satellite can provide more up-to-date images on conflict and disaster than Google Earth, where images in lesser-known areas are up to 30 years old.
Buying images from international suppliers also holds the disadvantages of price escalations and the unavailability of images of certain areas.
The SANDF would be able to use this satellite technology to obtain real-time terrain analysis for peace operations in unknown territories and spread spectrum analyses, as well as use the platform for intermittent highly secure communications in peace opera- tions outside South African borders and stereoscopic satellite image information to construct accurate digital elevation models in unknown territories.
?Local satellites are critical for independent assessment purposes. Satellites are critical in modern society. From navigation to communications, modern technologi- cal networks cannot function without the critical infrastructure provided by satellites,? he states.
The Sumbandila satellite is a small earth observation satellite technology demonstrator and was developed and manufactured by SunSpace engineers. It was launched on September 17, 2009, from Baikonur, Kazakhstan.
Sumbandila weighs 82 kg and carries a high-resolution imaging payload, an experimental communications payload and a Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation transmitter, among other technologies.
The satellite was built with many purposes in mind, including space technology development, scientific and engineering human capacity development to establish South Africa as a space-faring nation and the stimulation of academic programmes around space technology.
The main goals from a science and engineering perspective were to successfully demonstrate new South African technology in imaging and spacecraft design.
?To date, Sumbandila has produced 2 121 images in total, of which 1 128 were classified as low to zero cloud cover. We have, since, dramati- cally improved our success rate,? says SunSpace software development team leader Dr Jacobus van Zyl.
Olivier notes that, of all the satellites launched on the same rocket at the same time, the Sumbandila, which operated for two years, had the longest operational life, despite not remaining fully operational for its three-year design life.
He adds that it provided high-quality images and good amateur radio communications until it was subjected to the radiation of a big solar storm.
?After two-and-a-quarter years, Sumbandila is still alive and responding today. However, it is not capable of imaging anymore, a function that it retained for two years,? Van Zyl adds.
?While Sumbandila can no longer serve South Africa directly, the effects of this technology continue to shape space science and technological human capacity development, spacecraft engineering, industrial participation, critical component procurement and image data processing for the next generation of South African satellites,? states Olivier.
SunSpace hopes to incorporate the knowledge gained from previous satellite developments into future designs. Extending the operational life of satellites is a key focus for the company.
?We plan to roll out designs shaped by these lessons for satellites in the African Resource Management Constellation, the potential Indian/Brazil/South African satellites, very high resolution earth observation satellites, navigation satellite gap fillers and potential future communication satellites,? notes Olivier.
Automation of the proprietary satellite mission control system for control and image data processing that will eventually be independent of satellite sources is a popular area in the satellite imaging development chain.
Van Zyl and his team are currently working towards improving satellite imaging developments, as well as investigating ways in which technology can be applied to further benefit South Africa.
?There are many other military and intelligence payloads that can be hosted by satellites and we are excited to be able to work with other local manufacturers should the need arise,? says Olivier.

Reinventing Our Community: Birmingham should sell itself as birthplace of human rights, Chuck Krulak says
Chuck Krulak has been around the world both in and out of uniform. He's certain about what makes Birmingham unique.
"This isn't just the home of civil rights. It's the home of human rights," said Krulak, Birmingham-Southern College's president and the former commandant of the United States Marine Corps.
"Birmingham remade America. The fight here redefined the nation and spread to so much of the world," he said. "We should embrace that heritage. There should be monuments on street corners all over the city and region like there are in Washington.
"We don't need to be like Atlanta or Charlotte. We need to be like Birmingham can be, with leadership and vision.
Yet Krulak said he has found that too many in Birmingham don't appreciate all that the city and region has to offer. And Krulak said he has been particularly struck by an unwillingness to confront and embrace the city's past, especially its racial history and the struggles of the 1960s to overcome generations of racism and inequality.
"I don't know what is stopping us from celebrating in a real and everyday way the battles and victories won in the name of human rights," Krulak said. "Maybe some are embarrassed by the past. Maybe some are still angry. I don't know.
"But I know what went on here is a real thing that should be recognized and sold to the world as the second or third American revolution.
"It is something to be proud of and come together over."

SANTA MONICA, California (AP) ? "The Artist" won best picture and three other prizes Saturday at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film, a possible prelude to a big night at the Academy Awards for the black-and-white silent movie.
The film also won for best director for Michel Hazanavicius and lead actor for Jean Dujardin as a silent-era star whose career crumbles as talking pictures take over in the 1920s. It earned the cinematography prize for Guillaume Schiffman, too.
"The Artist" is the best-picture favorite at Sunday's Oscars.
Michelle Williams won best actress as Marilyn Monroe in the filmmaking tale "My Week with Marilyn."
Supporting-acting honors went to Christopher Plummer as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in "Beginners" and Shailene Woodley as a troublesome Hawaiian teenager in "The Descendants."
"The Artist" producer Thomas Langmann said the awards attention for the film was especially gratifying given how difficult it was to line up financing for a silent film, a form that went out of vogue more than 80 years ago.
"Everybody told us this is so much against conventional wisdom," Langmann said.
At Sunday's Oscars, Dujardin is in a two-man race for best actor against "The Descendants" star George Clooney. Williams is nominated for best actress at the Oscars, though Viola Davis of "The Help" and Meryl Streep of "The Iron Lady" are considered the favorites.
Williams gave the best performance among the Spirit Awards winners with a touching acceptance speech acknowledging her kinship with low-budget independent filmmakers and recalling her first time at the ceremony a decade ago.
"I wore my own clothes back then, which were not very good, and I cut my own hair, which also was not very good," Williams said. "I still remember the feeling that in this room, unlike others, that that was OK. Possibly even preferred. And what I thought then and I still feel now is that it's because this room was a room full of misfits, outcasts, loners, dreamers, mumblers, delinquents, dropouts. Just like me."
Plummer is the supporting-actor favorite at the Oscars, at 82 potentially becoming the oldest performer ever to win an acting Oscar.
"It's taken me the longest time to realize the Spirit Awards have nothing to do with booze," Plummer joked, going on to thank all the spirits that have come his way in his career, "good and evil."
Woodley was not nominated for an Oscar but won out over a lineup that included Academy Award nominee Janet McTeer of the Irish drama "Albert Nobbs."
"The Descendants" also won the screenplay award for director Alexander Payne and his co-writers, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.
Dujardin was unable to attend the Spirit Awards. He was traveling back to Los Angeles for Sunday's Oscars after the Cesar awards in France on Friday, where "The Artist" won six prizes, including best picture and director for Hazanavicius.
Writer-director Hazanavicius made a rushed trip from France to Los Angeles for the Spirit Awards, joking backstage that the "police escort to come from the airport, that was great."
Other winners:
? First feature: "Margin Call," directed by J.C. Chandor.
? International film, "A Separation," directed by Iran's Asghar Farhadi.
? Documentary: "The Interrupters."
? First screenplay: Will Reiser, "50/50."
? John Cassavetes Award for feature film made for less than $500,000: "Pariah."
An informal celebration compared to Hollywood's many black-tie honors, the Spirit Awards were presented in their usual venue in a tent along the beach in Santa Monica, just west of Los Angeles.
Hosted by Seth Rogen, the ceremony was taped to air later Saturday on cable television's Independent Film Channel.

Every year, we at Rotten Tomatoes sit in a room and try to pick who's going to win what at the Academy Awards. And every year, when Monday rolls around, we're frustrated, stunned, hurt -- we run the whole gamut of emotions, but one thing is clear: we didn't have any idea who would win. So why do we continue to apply scientific theories to our predictions, knowing that the whole process is a futile as guessing who will win the NFC East next year? Because we must. Without further ado, we present the RT editors' picks for the 84th Academy Awards. Take this list with a grain -- nay, a shaker -- of salt.
Best Motion Picture of the Year: The Artist
There's been a certain inevitability about The Artist; it's taken top honors at the Golden Globe, the BAFTAs, and the Directors Guild of America Awards. It's a celebration of the movies (which the Academy can certainly appreciate) that's likeable but not lightweight. In other words, it has just enough gravitas that voters can feel comfortable choosing it over Hugo (another delightful homage to old movies that might lose simply because Martin Scorsese got his long overdue Best Picture/Director statues in 2007) and The Descendants (which just doesn't feel like it has the momentum). We think The Artist is going to win big Sunday night, and we haven't seen many signs that would dissuade us from what's become a majority opinion.
Best Achievement in Directing: Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
It's rare that the director of the Best Picture winner doesn't take this one as well. Plus, if you win the Directors Guild of America award, you're practically a mortal lock for the Oscar. Even though Hazanavicius is up against some big names, we think he's got this one.
Best Performance by an Actor in Leading Role: George Clooney, The Descendants
The Academy loves George Clooney. The Academy also loves it when people deglamorize themselves. Thus, we're giving the Descendants star the nod over Jean Dujardin in what amounts to a two man race.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role: Viola Davis, The Help
Just about everyone commended The Help's ensemble acting, but even then, Viola Davis was singled out for praise. She was nominated once before (for Doubt, in 2008), and we think she's taking home the hardware this time.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: Christopher Plummer, Beginners
This category is tough, because it features two elderly legends who've never won an Oscar: Christopher Plummer and Max Von Sydow. The Academy has snubbed these guys many times before (Von Sydow deserved to win for The Seventh Seal, Plummer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country). Since Plummer already won the BAFTA, the Golden Globe, and like, every critic organization's award, we think he'll get the nod here.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role: Octavia Spencer, The Help
We think this one's pretty much a gimmie -- Spencer won the BAFTA, the Golden Globe, and the Screen Actors Guild awards in this category. And like Davis, she stood out in The Help, which is no small praise considering the actresses in that movie.
Best Animated Feature Film: Rango
With no Pixar flicks in the running this year, this category is wide open. We think Rango will take it, because it's fun and funny, and because it's loaded with movie references. (We could see the widely-praised but little-seen Chico & Rita sneaking in here, but we're sticking with the lizard.)
Best Original Screenplay: Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
It won both the Golden Globe and the Writers Guild of America award in this category, so that's a good sign. Plus, it's another opportunity to give some love to the Woodman's prodigious, prestigious output -- even if Allen's recent films have varied in quality, he's still capable of making really good movies at an advanced age, which is something that the Academy members certainly admire.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash, The Descendants
Alexander Payne is a screenplay adaptin' maniac. He already won an Oscar for Sideways, and it seems safe to say he'll get his second one here.
Remember when Lord of the Rings: Return of the King swept the Oscars partly because it was awesome but partly because the Academy wanted to give props to the whole series? This is the documentary version of that scenario. It also doesn't hurt that the Paradise Lost movies help spring three innocent people from the joint.
Best Foreign Language Film: A Separation
This one seems like a lock, since audiences and critics love it, and because it was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay. It also provides the Academy with a chance to spread some international goodwill at a time when the world community is rattling its sabers at Iran.

Dad says Oscar-nominated film glorifies convicts
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) ? Todd Moore isn't sure whether he'll watch the Oscars this weekend, when a documentary about the murder of his son and two other Cub Scouts could win an Academy Award.
Moore and his ex-wife, Diana, believe "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" glorifies the three men convicted in the Arkansas boys' deaths and asked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bar it from consideration for an Oscar.
The academy refused, saying the film met the basic eligibility requirements and was being viewed and evaluated by members.
"It would not be possible for the Academy ? its leadership, executives, or administration ? to insert itself into this process without risking the integrity of this longstanding procedure and of the awards themselves," wrote Rob Epstein, who chairs the Documentary Branch Executive Committee, in the letter dated Dec. 13. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter this week.
Epstein thanked the family for writing with such candor and said he could only begin to imagine the anguish they've suffered.
"I would not trivialize your pain by asking for your understanding, but I do hope this has clarified the organization's role in the Awards process," he wrote.
The film, directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, is the third in a series of HBO documentaries about the killings of Michael Moore, Stevie Branch and Christopher Byers in West Memphis. The three men convicted in their 1993 deaths, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, entered a plea deal last year that cut their prison term to time served and let them still claim innocence.
"They're probably going to wind up winning," Moore told the AP on Friday. "Hollywood seems to glorify people like this."
Berlinger, one of the film's directors, has expressed sympathy for the Moores, but said they're directing their anger at the wrong people.
"They should be upset with the State of Arkansas, not the many independent journalists and filmmakers who have examined this case and have come to believe in the innocence of The West Memphis Three," Berlinger said in an email.
Not all of the slain boys' parents share the Moores' point of view. Branch's mother, Pam Hobbs, has said she asked the state to reopen the case after seeing new evidence in "West of Memphis," a documentary about the case that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month.
Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley were convicted after Misskelley unexpectedly confessed and implicated the other two, describing sodomy and other violence. Misskelley, then 17, later recanted, and defense lawyers said he got several parts of the story wrong. An autopsy found there was no definite evidence of sexual assault, and Misskelley said the older boys abducted the Cub Scouts in the morning when they had actually been in school all day.
After the first "Paradise Lost" film aired in 1996, a number of celebrities joined an effort to free Echols, who had been sentenced to death, and the other two, who were sentenced to life in prison.

7 Steps To Write A Book | Submit Article for Free
Established authors tend to be the envy of many around the world. Having your book read in thousands of homes, schools as well as offices is no mean feat.
Many of us have at one time or another began writing a book. Just a few pages later, however, the creative gene dwindled as well as the entire idea was thrown into the bin.

4. Write the Back Cover

Historic Charleston, South Caroline With One Of Its Many Steeples
The southern town of Charleston, South Carolina is so lovely that it deserves multiple visits to really get to know all of its? hidden charms. That is exactly what my husband and I did on our road trip down to Florida and back. You may recall that we had stopped for one day ?in Charleston?but the lure of the picturesque city was calling us back as we headed north to our home in New England. Once again we stayed at the French Quarter Inn and were greeted with Champagne as we checked in.
French Inspired Bedroom
After unpacking and settling in to our French inspired ?bedroom,?we headed out to explore the city. The hotel is within walking distance of most everything that you want to visit and is right across from the restored markets.
Making Baskets For Over 70 Years
While walking through the market, I stopped and spoke with a woman who has made lovely sweetgrass baskets for over 70 years. The making of baskets has been handed down through her family from generation to generation. Her baskets are both beautiful and unusual.

Right outside the market you can find horse or mule draw carriages that will take you on a guided tour of the historic section of Charleston, stopping along the way to explain about the history of the beautiful homes and buildings from a century ago.

It was a damp and gray day but Charleston is such a wonderful city for walking that we ?decided to take a stroll so that we might peak down alleys and through garden gates. We discovered small hidden gardens,

Walking always builds up your appetite, so we headed back to the hotel to enjoy the free wine and cheese reception and meet some of the other guests staying at the hotel. ?Then it was upstairs to our room to change for dinner, a short walk away.
Tonight?s dinner reservation was at FIG. The initials stand for Food is Good and believe me it was. Chef Mike Lata was named Best Chef of the Southeast by the James Bread Foundation in 2010. The well known restaurant is renowned for its quality ingredients sourced from local farmers and growers. The restaurant feels like a combination of a neighborhood caf? and a little chic bistro.
Appetizers were classic yet served in a stylish and creative way. We started with a Wagyu beef carpaccio and chicken liver p?t?.

Main courses were a delicious slow baked snapper with artichoke-cauliflower grenobloise ?and a suckling pig confit, with saut?ed greens, roasted beets and mustard jus.

The next day, we were off again to explore the city. Unfortunately it was another drizzly day, but that couldn?t stop us. Thankfully the rain stopped and even though we didn?t have beautiful sun, we enjoyed our day of discovery.

We had made a reservation at Husk for lunch. This is probably one of the most well known restaurants in town and it didn?t disappoint.

Husk is noted for its farm to table meals. After walking in the front door you see a chalk board that has a list of ingredients used in the days cooking and the farms they came from.

We ordered to items from their snacks section of the menu to start?grilled crostinis with pimento cheese and country ham and?SC smoky wings with charred onion BBQ glaze and Sea Island benne.

Lunch was SC shrimp and grits with braised peppers and onion and Surry sausage an a Vermillion snapper with Carolina gold rice and tomato bacon braised pole beans. We had to have two of their famous sides for the table?bacon cornbread and country ham braised greens. We would go back to Husk just for another helping of sides. They were the best we have ever had.
Our evening started with cocktails at The Gin Joint and should have ended there with some small plates. The Gin joint specializes in pre-Prohibition spirits. Their cocktails are made with the best quality ingredients and spirits. They are so particular about making the best cocktail that they juice their own fruit and make their own syrups. The many paged cocktail menu is full of slings, smashes, fizzes and fine small batch sipping spirits.

After sampling two of their delicious cocktails, I can see why they have been written up so often in both local and national magazines and papers.
I don?t like to criticize restaurants?that is up to local reviewers. I have decided to make an exception and say that my tip of the day is not to go to Amen Street restaurant. The she crab soup was like eating a bowl of bland thick gravy. A salad of marinated tomatoes, hearts of palm and gorgonzola was sent back because it was uneatable. Oysters on the half shell were fine but shucked in the kitchen instead of out front. This has been the only restaurant on our entire trip that we left without ordering a main course. I don?t think I need to say more.
As much fun as we have had on our two brief stays?we are already looking forward to our next trip to Charleston, South Carolina. The historic city, the delicious food and the warmth of the people will keep us coming back for many years to come.

Amphibian family first for India

A new family of caecilians, the most enigmatic branch of the amphibians, has been discovered in northeastern India.
The animals, which at first glance resemble worms, live in forest soil and are most closely related to an African group of caecilians.
The females incubate their young for several months without eating.
Writing in the Royal Society journal Proceedings B, the scientists say the animals may be threatened by population growth and slash-and-burn agriculture.
Caecilians are very hard to spot as they live either underground or under leaf litter that lies on the soil.
The new discovery was the result of about 250 soil-digging expeditions over five years that covered every northeast Indian state.
"Caecilians are the most cryptic group of animals, and it's not possible to identify whether it's a new species or genus or family just after collecting it," said SD Biju from the University of Delhi, who led the project.
"We studied the molecules (DNA) and the morphology, both internal and external, to identify the species," he told BBC News.
When the analysis was complete, the researchers found they had not only a new species on their hands, but the first representative of a hitherto unknown family.

This is the 10th caecilian family to be identified, and the team named it Chikilidae, derived from the name used in the local Garo tongue.
DNA evidence suggests the family split from its closest African relatives more than 140 million years ago, when the ancient super-continent of Gondwana fragmented, separating present-day India and Africa.
Unlike the familar frogs and salamanders, caecilians are limbless and smooth.
Their eyesight is very limited and their skulls adapted for burrowing.
Reproduction and rearing of the young are varied. The most unusual known example is a species where the babies eat the mother's skin, which she sheds for the purpose.
Chikilidae'shabits are not quite so spectacular, though the mothers stay wrapped around their developing eggs for 2-3 months at a time, apparently not eating at all during this period.
Although Chikilidae turned up in about a quarter of the survey sites and so might be quite abundant, Prof Biju believes its future is not assured.
"We found them not only in the forest area but also very close to human settlement," he said.
"So conservation of this group is extremely challenging."
Some of the animals have reportedly been killed by villagers who mistook them for poisonous snakes. In fact, they carry no venom.
One positive point for the new discoveries is that the region seems to be free of the fungal disease chytridiomycosis, which has devastated amphibian populations in many parts of the world.
Globally, amphibians are the most threatened group of animals, with about 40% of species on the internationally-recognised Red List.
But new discoveries are regularly made, though most come from rarely-visited regions of rainforest rather than quite densely-populated areas.
Prof Biju has been involved in discovering scores of other new amphibian species in India, where he has been dubbed "FrogMan".

[Abstract]
Objective: To investigate the expression and relationship between bonemorphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and the clinical/pathological parameters inpatients with colorectal cancer.Method: The expressions of BMP-2 were respectively investigated in twogroup patients with colorectal cancer (n=30) and normal colorectal mucosa (n=10) by using immunohistochemical staining.Results: The positive rates of BMP-2 cells in each group were reduced inproper sequence as normal colorectal mucosa 100?(10/10) and colorectalcancer 53.33?(16/30), There were statistical significance among two group(P?0.05); The positive rates of Smad 1 cells in each group were reduced inproper sequence as normal colorectal mucosa 100?(10/10) and colorectalcancer 50?(16/30), There were statistical significance among two group(P?0.05); There were no correlation between the positive rates of BMP-2 andSmad 1 (P?0.05); There were no correlation between the expression of BMP-2or Smad 1 and age?sex?lymph node metastases and distant metastasesrespectively in patients with colorectal cancer (P?0.05).Conclusion: BMP-2 and Smad 1 proteins are expressed in normal colorectalmucosa, the altered expressions of BMP-2 and Smad 1 maybe participated inthe developing Of colorectal cancer. The expressions of BMP-2 and Smad 1may be no association with age?sex?lymph node metastases and distantmetastases in patients with colorectal cancer.
