Successful Ezine Advertising - Business - EzineMark
The results? Not much.
I was tired of hearing that the Internet is the largest market in human history. Maybe so, but how could I reach those millions of people?
The answer, I discovered, is ezine advertising.
Ezines are sometimes called 'opt-in' lists because everyone who receives an ezine has chosen to do so.
And that's why ezine advertising gets results. People read ezines and they'll read your ad. And if you've matched the ezine to the product you're selling, you've reached your target audience.
There are currently around 90,000 ezines being published every month. So whatever you're selling, there's more than likely an ezine that will take your ad straight to the audience you want to reach.
Ezine advertising is not only effective, it's cheap as well.
A 5 line ad in an ezine that goes to 3000 people will cost you between $5 and $20 per issue.As a general rule, you'll always get back at least the cost of the ad, and usually much more. So there's very little risk.
But there are some tips for successful ezine advertising. Here they are:
1. The first and most important rule is: "Track your Ads!" Say you place an ad in 5 different ezines and get a hundred responses. If you don't track your ads, you won't know which ezines were pulling responses and which weren't.
But how do you track your ads?
The simplest method is to place a key or a code at the end of your email address:
yourname@yourdomain.com?subject=ezineA
Then, when you get a reply with 'ezineA' in the subject field, you'll know which ezine it came from.
For a URL, it's the same principle:
http://www.yourdomain.com?ezineA
However, if you're going to code your URLs, you'll need a good webstats program to track the coded URLs. These two programs are excellent and they're both free:
Here's another way to code your URLs: for every ezine ad, create a duplicate of your homepage and name the page after the ezine that your ad will appear in. So, if the ad is appearing in EzineA, this is the URL you'd place in that ad:

2. Target your audience. It may seem obvious but some advertisers overlook this. If you're selling a web-marketing course, don't advertise in an ezine that deals with stock options; they probably won't be interested.
Use the 'subject categories' in any ezine directory to find ezines that relate to the product you're selling. You can find a list of 56 ezine directories in 'The Free Directory of Ezines' at:
3. Once you've chosen a number of ezines that target your audience, subscribe to them and examine the ads closely. If you see an ad that keeps repeating issue after issue, you can be pretty sure that it's getting results. You've found a good ezine to advertise in.
4. Check to see how many ads are in the ezine. You probably won't get much response from an ad in an ezine that has 15 or 20 ads per issue. Readers of those ezines have become hardened to the ads and have learnt to skip them.
5. Check to see if the ezine publisher has a policy of never running ads for two similar products in the same issue - your ad will be much more effective if it's the only one of it's kind in that particular issue.
6. Small ezines Vs. Big ezines: bigger is not always better. The big ezines with 1000's of subscribers tend to have more ads than the small ezines. Also, small ezines with only a few hundred subscribers often have a much more targeted audience than the big ezines.
7. Repeat your ads. Research shows that off the Web, an ad has to be seen about 21 times before someone acts on it; on the Internet it's about 9 times. If your budget allows, try and have your ad repeated at least three times in a particular ezine. Most ezines offer discount packages for bulk advertising.
8. Email address Vs. URL. The advantage of giving an email address is that it gives you the opportunity to send a powerful sales letter to the person who responded to your ad. It's also much easier to track your ads with an email address than a URL.
9. Offer something free in your ad copy. It'll often tip the balance between a response and no response.
10. Keep your ads short, even if you're not using the number of words you're allowed. Short ads are more likely to be read. Keep your sentences short too; they pack much more power. Use the word 'You'. Don't describe your product but tell the reader what your product can do for them.

Colon Cancer Treament Causes Hardship for Young Patients | Fight ...
Although nearly four out of ten stage III colon cancer patients had serious financial problems during treatment, treatment related expenses were particularly hard on patients under fifty.? After taking all factors into account, young patients were more than fifty times times more likely to experience financial hardship than patients over 75.? Treatment costs drove them to:
- be in debt
- have to borrow money from family or friends
- sell or refinance their homes
- experience a more than 20 percent drop in income
Financial difficulties sometimes led to stopping treatment early despite the fact that nearly all patients had insurance. 5.4 percent skipped treatments and 7.2 percent refused treatment altogether because of financial problems. Young patients were nearly nine times more likely to skip or refuse treatments.
Patients with incomes under $30,000 were six times more likely not to get recommended treatment. Not being able to work because of disability, leave of absence or employment also raised risk of not getting treatment.
Researchers sent questionnaires to 555 stage III colon cancer patients treated in Washington State between January 1, 2008 and March 1, 2010, identified through Cancer Surveillance System, asking them about the financial impact of their cancer treatment. Over half returned the surveys.
Serious financial hardships reported by all patients in the study included:
- 21.8 percent were in debt due to treatment-related expenses with an average debt of $26,860.
- 16.5 percent borrowed money from family or friends, on average $14,144.
- 5.4 percent either sold their home or took out a second mortgage
- 23.9 percent had at least a 20 percent drop in household income
Factors that contributed to financial problems were
- Being younger than 50
- Nonwhite race
- Annual income less than $50,000
- Medicaid or no insurance
- Work disability, leave of absence, or unemployment
People less likely to have serious financial issues were
- Widows
- People insured by Medicare with supplemental insurance
- Retirees
Veena Shankaran and her colleagues concluded,
A significant proportion of patients undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer may experience financial hardship, despite having health insurance coverage. Interventions to help at-risk patients early on during therapy may prevent long-term financial adverse effects.
They also wrote,
Future research should focus on exploring the impact of various financial experiences on quality of life and identifying specific factors that contribute to financial hardship. Interventions should be developed to help at-risk individuals before they face financial ruin.

Does Your Band Run Like a Startup? A SxSW Question | Legally Easy
At the South by Southwest interactive, music and film festival last week, we saw some lean bands and some lean startups. ?What do we mean? ?Everybody who hasn?t been on Mars for the past ten years knows that the music business has been fundamentally transformed by the Internet, by downloads and streams. ?For every new music app, there are probably thousands of bands and performers who have seen their livelihoods from their art form harder to come by as a result.
So, what can the lean bands learn from the lean start-ups that continue to change the way we consume and pay for musical entertainment? ?Start-ups like Napster, Pandora, Spotify (and the re-born Apple, of course) brought us: ?free downloads (often pirated and illegal), ?99 cent music on iTunes, and free music (with ads) on streaming sites from Spotify to Grooveshark. ?Yes, the landscape for professional music-makers has changed, and is still evolving rapidly.
If You Can?t Beat ?em You?d Better Join ?em
We spoke to several entertainment lawyers, at SxSW, well versed in the music business and asked them about the advice they?re giving their clients these days. We?ll hear more from them on this week?s podcast, but for now we can reveal that they certainly agree that being an artist is not simply about being creative, it is about running a business as well. In the words of lawyer John Bradley: ?There is no music without the business?
Traditionally, the largest segment of revenue for bands (and their labels), was the now-humble record. From LP to cassette to CD, bands sold physical records, fans bought the music and everyone made some money.
That old game has changed forever. With the ability to buy single songs inexpensively, or stream whole albums and playlists for free on the Internet, record sales have fallen rapidly. And what is being sold is bringing in less money.
In this new landscape, ?iTunes, according to artists, is emerging as a friend to artists, apparently. ?That?s because it is clear that Apple will keep ?only? $0.29 per $0.99 download. Sure, this means far less money for the artists than if they were to sell a physical record, but it?s something. And it?s comforting to be predictable.
On the other hand, Spotify is still an unknown quantity; how the site works with respect to revenue streams more mysterious and unpredictable. There are also sites like Grooveshark who don?t pay anyone anything. On top of this, there?s the sad estimation that 95% of all music downloaded is done so illegally. In other words, the entire recorded music industry?s digital sales revenue comes from just one out of every twenty songs downloaded.
So, with access increasing and spending falling, how do you make money in this industry?
Record labels are catching up with the times by offering bands so-called 360 contracts. What this means is that the label takes a cut from each revenue stream ? album sales, shows, tour and merchandise.
What, then, should bands be doing?
1. Don?t ignore the Internet
The Internet is how people learn about music and how it spreads.
Yes, you might only make $0.79 per song from iTunes, or a little less than half a penny from Spotify, taking content away from where people want it will not boost sales. In fact, making your content available will boost sales elsewhere, and as a recent piracy study explains, taking it away will do more harm than good:
When NBC removed its content from the iTunes store for about nine months in 2007 and 2008, there was an 11.4 percent increase in piracy, but no increase in NBC?s DVD sales ? a loss of close to $20 million, given 23,000 lost sales per day at an average price of $3. And when ABC added its content to Hulu in July 2009, piracy dropped by 30 percent. Likewise, when a major book publisher stopped selling new Kindle titles on Amazon in 2010, there was no increase in hardcover sales, and when the Kindle titles were finally made available, their sales were 50 percent lower than they otherwise would have been.
Moreover, new additions to the Spotify platform will include the ability to sell concert tickets and other merchandise. But it all starts with the availability of the music.
2. ?Incorporate
One of the fastest ways to start running your band like a business is to make it a legal entity. ?By doing so, you will have to make the hard choices about who owns what and why. ?This can really save you from misunderstandings, arguments and losses later. ?It can also give your band business credibility. ?Being incorporated erects a wall between your band as a business and the members of the band personally. Incorporation will protect you from accidents that occur at a show, like an amp falling on someone and crushing them ! Plus, many venues now want to see an EIN number. Don?t limit your chances of getting booked, and don?t put yourself in unnecessary danger.
3. Register through ASCAP or BMI
These rights management societies are like unions for artists. They?ll help you out and get you a little money on the aside, even from Internet radio plays.
4. ?Get a licensing deal
Find a firm small enough that they?ll be able to focus on you and your music. Same goes for getting a manager. Choose wisely, and stay empowered.
5. Don?t be afraid to challenge the system
There really isn?t just one way of doing things anymore. If you want to blog, or make viral videos and do fun covers ? great. Do what you?re inspired by and forget about the rules (because if there was a surefire recipe for success, we?d all be rock stars).
6. Go on TOUR
This is key. It?s where the money is, and it?s where the vibrancy is too. If you have a 360 record deal, the labels are winning big. If you don?t try not to sign this away.
7. Sell merchandise
Price it fairly ? take a look at what other bands are doing ? and this is always a great money-maker, plus free marketing !
8. Sell through multiple channels
Following on from not ignoring the Internet, don?t be afraid to have a presence on iTunes, Amazon, Grooveshark, Spotify, 8 tracks etc. The more the better.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and its Democratic allies raised more than $45 million in February, increasing their financial haul compared to January as worries mount that Republicans could outspend Democrats in 2012.
In a statement released on Twitter, Obama's campaign said 348,000 people contributed last month and 105,000 people gave money for the first time.
Nearly 98 percent of the month's contributions were $250 or less, it said.
"Since April 2011, a total of 1.64 million people have pitched into own a piece of this campaign," the Twitter message said.
Obama's Chicago-based re-election effort has spent the past several months building up a grassroots effort it hopes will help turn out the vote on Election Day in November.
Obama's campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and other joint fundraising committees took in a combined $29.1 million in January.
The Republican National Committee noted a different trend: Obama's February numbers were a drop from the $56.78 million his campaign raised on its own in February 2008.
"After three years of policies that have left our country with record debt, high unemployment, and soaring gas prices and healthcare costs, it's clear President Obama is having a hard time convincing voters he deserves another term," RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said.
Obama was in the middle of a tough primary battle with then-Senator Hillary Clinton in February 2008.
The Obama campaign said the funds it is raising now are focused on the November 6 general election. Republican candidates, who are still in the middle of divisive fight for their party's presidential nomination, are spending their campaign cash on the primary race.
"Every dime the Republicans are raising will be spent on the air carpet-bombing each other," said Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt. "As we work to build the largest grassroots campaign in history, our funds are a direct investment in our general election infrastructure on the ground."
The Obama campaign is confident about its infrastructure but worried about money.
Campaign officials fear that outside groups known as Super PACs could outspend Obama in their quest to put a Republican in the White House.
Super PACs are political groups that can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to influence political campaigns, even though they cannot be directly affiliated with a candidate.
To help offset those groups' financial strength, Obama held a five-event fundraising spree on Friday in Chicago and Atlanta, where he was projected to raise nearly $5 million or more.
The president is his campaign's best fundraising draw and he has done roughly twice as many fundraisers at this point in his re-election effort as his predecessor, Republican President George W. Bush, had done at the comparable time.
Obama has utilized the drawn-out Republican primary race to focus on boosting his campaign's coffers. Though his campaign had roughly $750 million for the 2008 election, it is concerned that the same amount would not be sufficient this year to counter the onslaught of ads from the Republican opposition.

US soldier seen as 'level-headed' before massacre
The US soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians during a shooting rampage was known to friends and family as "level-headed," his lawyers said as they planned to meet with him next week.
The suspect, identified as 38-year-old US Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, had served three combat tours in Iraq -- where he was wounded twice -- and was on his first deployment to Afghanistan at the time of the killings.
Whisked out of Afghanistan to Kuwait in the days after the attacks, Bales was transferred to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on Friday, where US officials said he was being held in "pre-trial confinement."
The US Army said Bales was being kept in "special housing" in his own cell, but no details have been released on a trial or even the charges to be brought against him.
"Public reports that Sergeant Bales's supervisors, family and friends describe him as a level-headed, experienced soldier are consistent with information gathered by the defense team," his lawyers said in a statement on Saturday, saying it was still "too early" to determine what caused the attack.
Civilian attorneys John Henry Browne and Emma Scanlan, along with detailed military defense counsel Major Thomas Hurley, indicated they planned to spend "several days" meeting with Bales next week.
"Sergeant Bales's family is stunned in the face of this tragedy, but they stand behind the man they know as a devoted husband, father and dedicated member of the armed services," they added.
Friends and neighbors also expressed disbelief, telling local media he was a trusted soldier.
Kassie Holland, a family friend, told the Los Angeles Times that Bales and his family seemed "very normal."
"He was always really gentle with his kids. He was full of life and seemed like a happy guy for the most part," Holland said as news rocketed through the blue-collar towns around Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma.
Paul Wohlberg, Holland's father, told the Tacoma News Tribune that Bales, who had lived in the neighborhood for more than five years, seemed "an OK guy."
The two men talked over the years, but Wohlberg said Bales didn't talk about his Army experiences.
"History may not show him as a good guy," Wohlberg said. "But that's how he appeared to me."
Bales allegedly left his base in the southern province of Kandahar before sunrise on Sunday, entered a nearby Afghan village and opened fire, killing men, women and children.
One of the worst atrocities committed by US forces in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion over a decade ago, the incident plunged US-Afghan relations to an all-time low.
Ties were already badly damaged after Americans burned Korans last month, sparking a wave of deadly anti-American protests, and an earlier video that showed US Marines urinating on the corpses of Taliban militants.
Several websites containing pictures and stories about Bales, including a 2009 Defense Department page, were taken down by the time his identity was revealed Friday, but some versions of the Web pages could still be accessed, shedding light on his military career.
According to a cached online article dated February 2009 from the official US Army website, Bales participated in one of the bloodiest clashes of the Iraq war -- a January 2007 battle against a messianic Shiite sect in southern Iraq known as the Soldiers of Heaven.
In the 15-hour engagement, according to the article, 250 fighters were killed, all enemy -- and Bales said he was proud his unit "discriminated between the bad guys and the noncombatants and then afterward we ended up helping the people that three or four hours before were trying to kill us."
"I think that's the real difference between being an American as opposed to being a bad guy, someone who puts his family in harm's way like that," Bales said.
Browne, the civilian attorney, said this week his client had gotten angry about a serious injury that a comrade sustained the day before the massacre, but held no animosity toward Muslims.
Bales, who joined the army less than two months after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, was also upset because he did not believe he would be deployed to Afghanistan after his extensive Iraq duty, his lawyer said.
A US official told AFP that Bales was believed to have been drinking prior to the incident, a violation of US combat rules.
The New York Times quoted one official who said Bales may have "just snapped" due to a combination of stress and tensions with his wife, though Browne has rejected reports of his client's marital problems.

Neither Brand nor his publicist could immediately be reached for comment.
Brand's film credits include "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek." A judge recently granted him a divorce from singer Katy Perry.
