Creativity is a Must For Seniors Scouting the Job Market | Making ...

The rules of the job hunting game are changing and too many seniors are woefully unprepared to successfully play. Business managers who are senior citizens represent the intellectual capital of virtually every industry and yet they continue to lose positions to younger, less experienced people.

How do so many seniors shift from being a valuable corporate asset to being viewed strictly from the standpoint of cost? Is the value proposition that hard to justify?

In order to play the job games successfully in this market, seniors need to assess their ability and willingness to use all the job search tools available to employers in today?s global marketplace.

Without using all the available job search and personal marketing tools, seniors struggle to rise to the top and stand out among numerous job hunters.

The Social Networks?

Relationships that lead to high quality jobs no longer begin when some human resources employee reviews your resume for a job from the local classified ads or from the Wall Street Journal.

More and more jobs are resulting from relationships that are formed through connections on social networks such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Interactions through direct correspondence or recommendations from personal connections are opening the doors to preferred job opportunities.

Employers are seeking information on the internet first before any invitations for a face to face interview occurs. And many of the jobs being filled are never advertised anywhere. Even the professional recruiters declare the internet as their medium of choice to find new prospective candidates.

Do you have a Facebook or LinkedIn account that represents your skills and interests accurately? If not, you are facing a disadvantage in the market. And that disadvantage will likely worsen over time.

This does not mean that more traditional methods of job search are a waste of time. Every job search technique has value in the search process but if you do not have or know about all the tools being used by your competitors, then your visibility and presence is diminished and the odds of getting to the face to face interview worsen. Every senior must think outside the proverbial box and recognize the value of exposure and connections through social networks on the internet.

Viewing these internet tools as something that only the techies or young people do and a waste of time for a senior manager could prove to be a mistake when you are facing a loss of employment and need a job. Start now. The game of employment is serious and requires consistent attention to achieve the results you desire.
