THE CONNING TOWER: Cain named USA Track & Field Athlete of ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDIANAPOLIS - Mary Cain (Bronxville, N.Y.) has been named USA Track & Field?s Athlete of the Week after running the fastest 3,000-meter time ever run by a high school girl with her time of 9:02.10 to win the Dempsey Indoor, held at the University of Washington on Jan. 12.

While she is only a junior in high school, Cain bettered a strong field of collegiate and professional runners to open her indoor season with a record-setting victory.

?It definitely is very exciting running against professionals now,? Cain said. ?Many of the runners in my races have amazing resumes and a lot of experience, so I just remind myself that every race is just a learning experience.?

Her time is more than 15 seconds faster than the indoor high school record of 9:17.7, set in 1991 by Melody Fairchild. It is also well under the fastest ever girls outdoor time of 9:08.6, which was run by Lynn Bjorklund in 1975. Cain?s run on Saturday came on an oversized 307-meter track, which may prevent it from being officially ratified for record purposes.

?I was really excited to see the time 9:02.10,? Cain said. ?Being able to achieve a big PR was really exciting. I went into the race just wanting to run smart and gain experience, but the time really was the cherry on top.?

Now in its 12th year, USATF?s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

2013 Winners: January 9, Bobby Mack; January 16: Mary Cain

ROLLINS DROPS HURDLES CR IN '13 OPENER
Clemson's Brianna Rollins, the NCAA runner-up last year, clipped .06 off the collegiate record in the women's 60m hurdles at the Tiger Challenge on Jan. 11. Rollins, who won the NACAC Under-23 100m Hurdles last summer for Team USA and placed 6th at the Olympic Trials, bettered the previous standard of 7.84 by Ginnie Crawford of USC in 2006.

Teammate Dezerea Bryant, a World Junior 4x100m gold medalist in Barcelona last year, lowered her PR in the 60m to 7.19.

LOXSOM MOVES INTO TOP 10 IN 800M
2012 World Junior 800m silver medalist Casimir Loxsom of Penn State moved to No. 10 on the all-time U.S. collegiate list with his 1:46.98 at the Nittany Lion meet on Jan. 12. Freshman teammate Brannon Kidder, a 4:03.12 miler in high school in '12, sliced almost three seconds off his PR with a 1:48.17 in second.

MORE WEIGHTY MARKS FOR MCCALL
On the heels of her late-2012 19.10m/62-8 blast in the shot put, the NYAC's Jeneva McCall exploded to a lifetime best in the 20-pound weight throw Jan. 11 at Carbondale. On her fifth throw, McCall notched a 23.94m/78-6.5 to move to No. 6 on the all-time world list and No. 4 on the U.S. all-time list. For good measure she added a win in the shot with a heave of 17.99m/59-0.25.

RUPP, CENTRO DROP DOWN FOR WINS AT UW
Olympic 10,000m silver medalist Galen Rupp dropped down to the mile at the Washington Preview in Seattle Jan. 12, taking the win with a comfortable 3:57.15 ahead of Olympic steepler Donn Cabral. Matthew Centrowitz, fourth in the London 1500m and a bronze medalist at the 2011 Worlds, won the 800m at 1:51.60.
